He got his PhD in Computer Science in 2001 from Lancaster University, UK. He taught over 100 courses, mainly in the areas of Ubiquitous Systems, Distributed Systems, Digital Innovation and Urban Informatics, to various graduate and post-graduate courses, including Doctoral Programs in Informatics, Information Systems and Telecommunications.
Rui José is a full member of Centro Algoritmi, where he leads the Urban Computing group. His research interests include ubiquitous systems and Smart Cities, more specifically the design and development of urban information services that are situated within particular physical and social settings. In his current work, he is developing a new Information Architecture for situated displays, a new global service for indoor navigation, and new information tools for urban cycling and other soft mobility modes.
He has over 140 publications in books, book chapters, journals and proceedings of international and national conferences, 80 of which are indexed (ISI, Scopus) and 24 are international collaborations (co-authored with researchers from non-Portuguese institutions). Publications include top journals and conferences, such as Ubicomp Conferences, IEEE Computer, Sensors, IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, IEEE Pervasive Computing or Personal and Ubiquitous Computing.
Rui José collaborated in 12 research projects and 12 industry projects, all of which with competitive funding. He has been PI or co-PI in 9 of those projects, including projects funded by international programs, such as FP7, FET-OPEN and Portugal/CMU. In the last 10 years, he was directly responsible for managing over 2000 K€ of research funding. He is also involved in collaborative projects between Bosch Car Multimedia and ALGORITMI, where he is addressing smart mobility challenges.
Rui José has an extensive experience in peer-reviewing for scientific publications, as Program Committee member or reviewer for Ubicomp, Pervasive, CHI, PerDis, DIS, MUM, IE, EICS, Mobile HCI, ACE, IPIN, Interact, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Pervasive Computing, Mobile Computing and Communications Review (MC2R) and many others. He has been involved in more than 80 Program Committees. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of RISTI and ADCAI. He was General Chair or TPC chair of 2 international conferences. He has worked as expert in the evaluation of research proposals in national and international programs, including the Portuguese Innovation Agency (ANI), COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) and Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Program.
